How can we create sustainable, attractive, and inclusive urban spaces? Together with project partners and the locals, we experiment with this as part of the Desire project in Kalundborg, Denmark. In recent years, the city has witnessed growth in the biotech industry and the relocation of universities to the area. Now, the city aims to kickstart urban development by collaborating with its citizens to envision new possibilities. Have a look at the film!

Denmark's biodiversity crisis demands ambitious solutions, warned Prof. Carsten Rahbek, cautioning against superficial green efforts. Perhaps the municipalities lack help to make significant green decisions, suggested Politician Rasmus Nordquist. However, the municipalities will be able to learn from green urban development projects, e.g. Kildedal. hoped city and sustainability manager Siv Raun Andersen. Mike Ameko Lippert, Strategy Director at SLA - an internationally renowned nature-based design studio in Copenhagen, talked about the importance of aesthetic nature sensitivity, while Professor at the University of Copenhagen Helle Tegner Anker discussed the law regarding nature and cities. The hall was full of listeners when Desire's partner DAC together with Desire recently invited to a dialogue meeting. Watch also the video (Danish).
The social housing area Gadehavegaard, 20 km from the centre of Copenhagen, will be transformed in the coming years. As a part of that, a parking lot will be changed to a green urban space for the citizens. The Desire partner the building administration Domea.dk has invited two 8th grade classes to give ideas for the urban space.
DAC - Danish Architecture Center (Dansk Arkitektur Center) and Desire invited to an inspiring dialogue (Danish)! Have a look.
In Desire, our partner 3XN/GXN and subcontractor AGORA have produced a toolkit based on their involvement with Domea.dk in Gadehavegaard, Denmark and with kids from 8-grade classes at a local school. Learn more and download it for free.
In Riga, the Desire project is facing the biggest local challenge we have here: Changing the mentality of the people, to make them realize they are not just users living in a place where a central system deals with everything, but that they can actively engage in and create their own city – their own home. Have a look at the new Desire film with our partner Riga municipality, Rudis Rubenis and Ieva Zībārte, Representative of the municipalities department Rigas Buildings. - The filmmaker is Benjamin Hesselholdt.
As something completely new in Latvia, the Desire partner Riga Municipality involves citizens in the renovation of a Soviet era apartment block and its outdoor area. The hope is that it will become the first really good example of Soviet housing block renovation in Riga and that others join forces to follow the example.
This is the Desire Academy podcast series, where Desire members, staff and academics share knowledge about the Desire sites around Europe - and how to transform our society to be more circular and irresistible. In this very first episode is the woman at the core of the Garden Caretakers in Herlev and utilizer of the being of place idea, Madeleine Kate McGowan of the NXT communication and innovation bureau.
At a meadow beside a construction site in Herlev, DK, artist Davide Ronco creates a temporary artwork from bricks moulded using local soil, challenging the permanence of human architecture. As the structure crumbles over time, it symbolizes nature's reclamation of land. A fleeting art project that questions our relationship with the Earth.
Last week, the Desire project and BLOXHUB in Copenhagen hosted the third New European Bauhaus Cluster Workshop, gathering the six lighthouse projects, the coordination and support project CrAFt, and CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. All projects share a common goal: the implementation of the EU Green Deal, emphasizing beauty, sustainability, and collaboration.
Through the Desire project, the city of Kalundborg, DK has established a citizen group that, together with architecture students and a design firm, will experiment with small, simple things in public spaces.
In a new blog post, Jenny Andersson from the Desire expert organization The Really Regenerative Centre, CIC argues that we need to change our approach to working with living systems. She suggests that we need to be more humble and respectful and that we need to listen to the wisdom of the system. Jenny also emphasizes the importance of being open to new ideas and staying humble in our pursuit of a more regenerative future.
Listen to the place before you develop it. But how? Perhaps by using art! In Desire an Irresistible Circular Society our partner in Herlev, Denmark NXT has introduced a new character ‘The Garden Caretaker’ to help reconcile the city with nature.

What do citizens think about an urban area? And what is important to them when transforming part of it into a green, attractive urban space? In the Desire project, we are experimenting with an app as a tool for collecting and listening to citizens' opinions - and thereby involving them in the green transition. We visited the social housing area Gadehavegaard to see, how two school classes used the app.
Credit: GXN, Visions for Gadehavegaard, Theme weeks at the school.
Over the course of two Desire theme weeks, school children at Gadehavegaard have been introduced to the process of translating ideas and desires into tangible design proposals. This experimental process has generated valuable insights in both directions, and now these experiences will be translated into principles that can be applied by others seeking to engage users in the design process.
Educational programmes at a local school will help to see new potentials for the area's future development through the eyes of young people. At the same time, the process will provide young people with new skills and knowledge in biodiversity, circularity and inclusion/participation. Desire-partner housing administration company Domea.dk and housing association DFB are excited and hope to maintain contact with the young people.

In a Desire panel debate at the UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023, our panel discussed the green transition for a full auditorium.

Nature in the city is no longer solely defined by a freshly mowed lawn, a flowerbed, or a plane tree on the street. Not anymore, at least. Emerging agendas, where climate and biodiversity take centre stage, are shifting our perception of nature, and this shift is already visible in the urban landscape. The fourth Garden Caretaker has moved into the greenhouse in Herlev, DK. Meet him to open greenhouse in November. Davide Ronco is a multidisciplinary artist. “My practice is rooted in extensive material research and solid craftsmanship. Through my work, I challenge conventional tools and methodologies, using site-specific installations and temporary interventions to explore the dichotomy between natural and artificial. Among others, I utilize locally sourced clay and challenge the limitations of the material by embracing its inherent cracks and imperfections. My ongoing research centres on the concept of Ad Extremum, or “until the end; death,” (the human presence’s narrowness) as a reflection of the precarious existence of humankind examining themes of transience, fragility, and decay, and the opposition and discrepancies between humanity and nature.” Open Greenhouse concept on November 16th. Finally, Davide Ronco will present his project on site on November 22nd.

It has become a widely referenced statistic that our built environments are responsible for approximately 40 percent of global carbon emissions. Yet, it’s less publicised that current carbon reduction policies and pledges, including all binding long-term net-zero targets, would only limit warming to around 2.1°C by the end of the century, resulting in catastrophic consequences. This panel debate brings together leading European actors driving systemic transition of European built environments across public and private sectors. Together we will explore how to leverage our collective force to transition, at the scale and speed that is needed.
